A body believed to be missing, 19-year-old student Miya Marcano, was found near an apartment complex in Orlando, Fla., on Saturday morning, officials said.
The body was discovered at 10:45 am during a search near the Tymber Skan on the Lake condominium, Orange County Sheriff John Mina told a news conference .
The sheriff said the cause of death has yet to be determined.
“Everyone wanted this result to be different,” said Mina, whose department sought out Marcano for a week.
Mina said there are no suspects in the case apart from Armand Manuel Caballero, whose cell phone data led police officers to Marcano's body. Caballero was found dead of an apparent suicide in his own apartment elsewhere in Orlando on Monday.“We believe very conclusively that Armando Caballero is responsible for this crime and we are not looking for another person or persons in this case,” the sheriff said.
Marcano turned down several advances from Caballero, a maintenance worker at the Arden Villas apartment complex, where she lived and worked. The Valencia College student disappeared on Sept. 24 after she failed to show up for an overnight flight to Fort Lauderdale, where her parents live.
Investigators soon discovered that Caballero had used a master key to enter Marcano's apartment about half an hour before she was last seen finishing work at the complex's rental office.
There were signs of struggle in his room, including blood on the pillow, family members said. Caballero was later captured by surveillance video the day she disappeared carrying gloves, a blanket and a bag.
Mina said Caballero's cell phone data led them to the body, but only after taking them in the wrong direction first.
The data showed that Caballero drove around three counties in the hours following Marcano's disappearance. From 3 am to 4 am on Sept. 25, he was near a swampy area of New Smyrna Beach, about 60 miles northeast of Orlando. Police officers searched this area extensively on Friday but found nothing.
“I really think he was trying to get the authorities out of the way by going all over the place,” Mina said. "Perhaps in an effort to possibly get away with it, before taking his own life."
The data also showed that Caballero spent about 20 minutes that night at the Tymber Scan condominiums where he lived, Mina said. Police found her body in a nearby wooded area on Saturday.
Mina said they will continue the search for two cell phones and a set of keys related to the case, but believes they can reconstruct the rest of Caballero's movements. “We will be able to piece together exactly what happened,” he said.
Authorities are awaiting official identification by the coroner, but noted that Marcano's purse was found near the body.
